Established in 1924 by Ellen Browning Scripps, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla has been one of Southern California’s premier medical centers for more than 80 years. In 1964, Scripps La Jolla moved from downtown La Jolla to its 43-acre site east of Interstate 5. Today the hospital provides care for more than 130,000 patients each year, and is equipped with 312 licensed beds, has more than 2,200 employees and approximately 800 affiliated physicians.

Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla offers a wide range of medical and surgical services including a Level II Trauma Center and 24-hour emergency services, intensive care, interventional cardiology and radiology, radiation oncology, cardiothoracic and orthopedic services, neurology, bariatric surgery and women’s health services.

Each year at Scripps La Jolla, we:

  • Have 130,000 patient visits
  • Deliver 4,000 babies
  • Perform 6,000 heart catheterizations
  • Conduct 1,000 cardiac electrophysiology procedures
  • Perform more than 700 open heart surgeries
  • Receive 29,300 emergency room visits

We are consistently recognized for patient care excellence, and are the first hospital in San Diego to receive the prestigious Magnet designation by the American Nursing Association for patient care excellence. We have consistently earned the Consumer Choice Award from the National Research Corporation. In 2007, U.S.News & World Report ranked Scripps La Jolla as one of America’s Best Hospitals in Cardiac Care and gynecology.
